Limited interviewers. When the same few people do all interviews, they naturally calibrate with each other. They know what good looks like because they've seen the same comparisons. Scale adds more interviewers who haven't shared that experience.

Founder involvement. Early-stage founders often interview everyone. Their vision and standards are applied directly. As hiring volume grows, they can't be in every interview, and their judgment has to be distributed somehow.

Informal evaluation. Small teams can discuss candidates informally and reach consensus through conversation. Large teams need structured evaluation to handle volume and ensure consistency.

Candidate experience. A few candidates get personalized attention. Many candidates risk getting lost in a process that wasn't designed for volume.

Building Scalable Foundations

Before scaling, you need foundations that can support volume:

Clear hiring criteria. What are you actually looking for? This needs to be explicit enough that multiple interviewers can evaluate consistently. "Someone smart" isn't criteria. "Demonstrates problem decomposition, communicates technical decisions clearly, shows evidence of shipping complex features" is criteria.
